At Bucket List Travel, we’re all about life-changing experiences not to be missed. And that is exactly how Lonely Planet describes the walk amidst the Tongariro volcanoes.
Rated as the best one-day hike in New Zealand, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a trek across a volcanic alpine landscape of dramatic contrasts. It takes in some of the most dramatic landscapes you will ever see – steaming vents, glacial valleys, ancient lava flows, breath-taking lunar landscapes, native beech forest and alpine meadows, cold mountain springs, and vivid emerald crater lakes – all with fantastic views over central North Island.
Have you always wanted to do Tongariro Crossing but have put off by the throngs of tourists? 2020 could be the year to explore New Zealand. This New Zealand hiking tour is a once-in-a-lifetime experience not to be missed. So do it this year. Go and enjoy the space and the views without the herds of people.

The track is a one way 19.4km hike that takes 7–8 hours at a comfortable speed with plenty of stops for photos or resting. Tongariro Crossing – what to expect
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is an incredible 19km journey through a UNESCO dual world heritage park recognised for its spiritual and cultural significance. This hike begins at 1120m above sea level, climbs the Mangatepōpō Valley to the saddle between Mount Tongariro and Mount Ngauruhoe, through South Crater before climbing again to Red Crater, the highest point on the crossing at 1886m.
You will then descend on a volcanic rock scree track to the vivid Emerald Lakes, known as Ngarotopounamu (greenstone-hued lakes). After passing Blue Lake, also known as Te Wai-whakaata-o-te-Rangihiroa (Rangihiroa’s mirror), the track sidles around the northern slope of Tongariro, then descends in a zigzag track past Ketetahi Shelter and down to the road end at 760m.
